Apparently, the best archival methods of mounting a photograph also allow for some ugly wrinkling of photographs in the frame. This method is a good compromise.

Matt > Step 1:
Cut out enough acid-free adhesive backing to cover the back of your print.
Matt > Step 2:
Stick the print to the adhesive, smoothing out all the gaps between adhesive and print.
Matt > Step 3:
Trim the excess adhesive to the exact dimensions of the print.
Matt > Step 4:
Measure (and mark) the print to be exactly centered on the backing.
Matt > Step 5:
Tack down one end of the print to the backing first, centered on your marks.
Matt > Step 6:
Slowly and steadily adhere the rest of the print to the backing.

Check for uneven spots and...

... smooth them out (making sure not to damage the print, of course).
Matt > Step 8:
You need only attach the matte to the backing along the top edge with two small pieces of tape.
